We are delighted to share this catalogue from one of our popular previous exhibitions. Queen Victoria's visit to Paris of 1855 was a milestone in European diplomacy. It represented the first visit of a reigning British monarch in Paris since Henry V had led his conquering army into the city in 1419, and demonstrated the Queen's determination to improve Anglo-French relations at a time of great uncertainty in Europe. The evocative watercolours that Napoleon III subsequently sent to the Queen as an aide-memoire of her tour are not just a timeless and engaging record of this notable visit, but also demonstrate Victoria's passion for collecting watercolours, which in turn inspired her own artistic endeavours.
