Mrs Baldwin Mounted Print
A stunning print taken from our British Portrait Collection. Bored with sitting for this portrait, Jane Baldwin (1763-1839) read a book throughout. Reynolds later changed this into an ancient coin - a prop which fitted with James's image. Born in Turkey to English parents, she married a wealthy diplomat aged 16 and was stationed in Egypt. Jane's arrival in London in 1781 coincided with a growing fascination with the East, and she was considered to be exotic and alluring. She is posed in the outfit that she had recently worn to a Royal Ball, a type of costume known as "Turquerie".
